East Liberty | Pittsburgh, PA
This project creates a cultural node in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh through its manifestation as a modern theater-house. Situated on a busy street corner, the Cinematek engages the storefront along Penn Avenue (left to right) with a restaurant and flexible media space, then forms a mini-plaza space at the corner and begins to engage S. Highland Avenue (top to bottom) with a lobby and interesting egress staircase that hovers over the sidewalk.

Many people often find movie theaters to be a destination for night life, and the Cinematek is just that. The elements on the ground floor—the restaurant, media space, and lobby—are completely open to the street with fully glazed walls, so that their functions are exposed and inviting to those beyond. However, the theater itself is clad in an opaque material that glows with the colors of the movie screen inside as it plays.
